What is Michigan Self-service Station?

Michigan Self-service Station is a Secretary of State kiosk that offers a fast and easy way to renew your car, truck, motorcycle, and watercraft registrations.

Simply scan the barcode on your renewal notice or type your license plate number and the last four digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the touchscreen.

The ATM-like machine will accept your payment and print your registration and license plate tab on the spot!

You may renew, but not print, watercraft registration renewals at the station. The registration will be mailed to your address on file. The registration will arrive within 14 business days.

Who can use the stations

You can renew your registration if your address, name, and vehicle information is correct on your renewal notice. Your notice must also contain the phrase “Insurance Verified Electronically.” Note: You can't renew a gross vehicle weight over 55,000 pounds at the station.

When can I renew at a station?

You can renew at a Michigan Self-service Station any time after receiving your renewal notice (approximately 6 months prior to your expiration date). Late fees will be as­sessed if you renew after your expiration date, but you can still renew at the station up to 10 months after your expiration date.

Will I pay a fee to use the station?

Along with your renewal cost and any late fees (if applicable), there is a $3.95 service fee for every vehicle renewed at the station. Additionally, there is a 2.3% credit card processing fee.

If you choose to renew online or in the branch, there is a similar credit card processing fee.

How can I pay?

Credit and debit cards are accepted at all locations. Cash payments are accepted at select locations.

What if I need proof of auto insurance?

Please wait 10 days after updating your auto insurance to renew at the station. This allows time for your insurance to provide updated information to our statewide vehicle registration system. The station cannot accept paper proof.

At this time the station can process vehicle renewals. In the future the stations will be capable of additional transactions, such as driver’s license renewals and replacement registrations.
